‘Robber ringleader’ killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

The ringleader of an alleged robber gang was killed in a gunfight with police at Mukteswari village in Fultala upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Belel Hossain alias Boma Belal, a resident of Jugnipasha village in the upazila.

Acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a police team conducted a drive there around 1:45am, said Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Fultala Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire at them, prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Belal was caught in the line of fire and received bullet injuries while others managed to flee the scene.

Belal was rushed to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.

He was wanted in 12 cases.

Four policemen were also injured in the incident.

Police recovered one shooter gun, one bomb, one sharp weapon and two rounds of bullets from the spot.
