In the wake of attacks on Hindus in Brahmanbaria, India has conveyed its deep concern over the security of the minority community members in Bangladesh.
Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has talked to Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla in this regard and asked him to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to convey their “grave concern”.
“I have asked Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka to call on the Prime Minister and express our grave concern about the safety and wellbeing of the Hindus in Bangladesh,” Sushma tweeted on Sunday.
Her response came when a Tweeter accountholder, ‘templetree’, tweeted tagging the Indian External Affairs Minister saying, “There is large scale violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Their houses and temples are being destroyed. Please do something.”
When contacted, a diplomat at the Indian High Commission told UNB that it has conveyed the concerns through appropriate channel though there has been no meeting with the Prime Minister.
On October 30, an unruly mob equipped with sharp weapons went berserk and demolished a number of Hindu temples and nearly 100 houses in the upazila following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the holy Kaaba.
In a fresh attack on Friday, miscreants also set fire to at least six houses of Hindus in the upazila amid alertness of law enforcement agencies and local administration.
