Cyber cafés to come under CCTV surveillance: Tarana

State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Sunday said the installation of CCTV cameras at cyber cafés will be made mandatory to prevent the spread of religious provocations using social media.

“It’ll be possible to prevent new type provocation if the café users come under surveillance alongside the owners through installation of CCTV cameras,” she said.

The junior minister was talking to reporters after a programme marking the distribution of prizes among the best officers of the postal department at GPO on the occasion of the World Post Day.

The move came following the attacks on the houses, worship places and business establishments of the Hindu community in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria over a Facebook post.

Tarana said the law enforcement agencies will be able to instantly detect the culprits if any provocative contents are posted from cyber cafés which are under CCTV coverage.

She also said they will talk to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission which will ask the café owners to install CCTV cameras.
